From Mambo to Salsa Havana to New York

Calling all mambonicks, jazz fans, salsa aficionados and anyone curious about Latin music A talk and listening session with Grammy-nominated music journalist Judy Cantor-Navas.

A talk/listening session that follows the evolution of the Latin jam session, from the meetings between innovative musicians in Havana in the 1950s who invented the mambo and the cha-cha-cha, to the creation of a new urban music – salsa – in New York in the 60s and 70s.

We will talk about how the five albums of the “Cuban Jam Sessions” released by the Cuban label Panart in the 50s and 60s directly influenced the Latin musicians from the “barrio” of New York who would be part of the famous Fania All Stars.

Recordings and videos by artists like Cachao, José Fajardo, Bebo Valdés, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Johnny Pacheco and Celia Cruz will illustrate this conversation about the innovation of Cuban music, its global popularity and the evolution of Latin music in New York City, from the mambo craze to the creation of salsa.
