GREENPORT, N.Y., May 13, 2024 — Peconic Landing’s 18th Annual John May Mile and 5K race on May 11 was a great success, raising $24,730 for the Greenport Fire Department. Funds were contributed by race participants, Peconic Landing members, team members, and community sponsors.
Since inception in 2005, the annual John May Mile and 5K has raised more than $372,000 to support the local first responders. According to the Greenport Fire Department, these funds go towards the purchase and maintenance of rescue equipment vital to keeping the volunteers safe during response efforts.
This year, over 300 participants attended the event, with 119 individuals running the 5K, 26 walking the John May Mile, and dozens of volunteers helping the event run smoothly. The event attracted runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, with participants ranging in age from four to 79. Nicholas Berglin, 27, of Hampton Bays, NY was the first to complete the 5K race, finishing with an impressive time of 17 minutes, 2.30 seconds. Berglin previously won the race in 2022. Ema Tufekcic, 27, of New York, NY was the first female to cross the finish line at 25 minutes, 16.48 seconds.
As part of the awards ceremony after the race, Peconic Landing’s President and CEO Robert J. Syron, alongside Peconic Landing’s Chief Operating Officer Gregory Garrett, Greenport Village Mayor Kevin Stuessi, and Southold Town Councilman Brian Mealy, presented the 2024 Older Americans Champion Award to George Hubbard, the former Mayor of Greenport Village. The annual award honors local individuals or organizations for their years of service and continued dedication to older Americans, acknowledging the contributions they make to improve the lives of seniors on the East End.
“Over the course of his tenure as Mayor and throughout his 16 years on the Village Board, Mayor Hubbard has played an enormous role in supporting the older adults here at Peconic Landing and in the greater community,” said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. “With over 45 years of service to the Greenport Fire Department, he has undoubtedly touched many lives and left a mark on our community. We thank you Mayor Hubbard for your unwavering dedication to Greenport and to the older adults that call this special village home.”
