GREENPORT, N.Y., April 9, 2025 — Peconic Landing will host the 19th Annual John May Mile and 5K Race to benefit the Greenport Fire Department on Saturday, May 10. The family-friendly event features brunch, raffles, and more.
The John May Mile and 5K fundraiser is open to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness abilities, offering both a relaxed mile-long walk and a more challenging 3.1-mile run. Registration and stretching begin at 7:30 a.m. at Brecknock Hall with the race and walk to start at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers may register at www.peconiclanding.org/JMM.
Since inception in 2005, the annual John May Mile and 5K has raised more than $372,000 to support the local first responders. The most recent event in 2024 contributed a total of $24,730, helping to purchase and maintain rescue equipment vital to keeping fire department volunteers safe during response efforts.
“The Greenport Fire Department is already responding to an incredibly high number of calls in 2025, and we’re preparing for an even greater surge in 911 responses as the high season rolls in,” said Marine Fire Rescue Lt. Jordan Arnold in a statement made prior to the event. “Community support is vital and every donation helps our volunteers stay ready to respond when it matters most.”
Following the race will be an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the back lawn of Brecknock Hall. As part of this ceremony, Peconic Landing will present The Older American’s Champion Award to Thomas E. Murray Jr. of Orient, NY. The annual award honors local individuals or organizations for their years of service and continued dedication to older Americans, acknowledging the contributions they make to improve the lives of older adults on the East End of Long Island. Murray will be honored for his 25 years of service on the Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (ELIH) Board of Directors and 18 years on the Board of the ELIH Foundation.
“Mr. Murray’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare on the East End has made a profound and lasting impact on our community,” said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. “Through more than two decades of leadership at Stony Brook ELIH, he has helped shape a healthier future for generations to come. We are proud to honor Mr. Murray as this year’s Older American’s Champion for his exceptional service, vision, and dedication to the well-being of older adults and all who call the North Fork home.”
Peconic Landing has maintained a long-standing collaborative relationship with Stony Brook ELIH, working together on initiatives that support community health and education. This includes public wellness events and coordinated efforts through Peconic Landing’s Center for Well-Being, which provides access to specialist services from Stony Brook Medicine for both Peconic Landing members and the greater community.
